MUNICIPALITY OF KOLARI
In Finland, Kolari is known as region that is growing into a major holiday destination. Ylläs which is a travel centre of an international standard is Kolari's main tourist attraction and it offers first-rate services throughtout the year Ylläs. Not only is Ylläs a winter sport paradise, but it is also well-known for organizing cultural events. There are operas in the autumn, jazz and blues festivals during the late winter and early spring, and the musical festival 'Ylläs Soikoon' attracts friends of culture to the fell in the summer.

One of the many prides of the Kolari region is its spectacular nature. Fishing, hiking in the forests and in the fells, cross-country and slalom skiing, rowing and canoeing are excellent ways to relax within the realm of nature .

During the winter season, the Ylläs fell is a popular cross-country skiing, slalom skiing and holiday destination. During the summer season, besides the hiking tracks, there is a wide range of fishing opportunities. The Äkäs- ja Kuerjoki rivers which join the Torniojoki river are within the immediate vicinity of the Ylläs region. Here you can fish for trout, grayling, whitefish and even sea trout.

Ylläs also has some stocked fishing ponds such as Kesälampi and Hannukaistenlampi where you can catch rainbow trout and trout.

Lake Kesänkijärvi in Äkäslompolo is stocked with artic char, brown trout and rainbow trout. Other fish species are pike, perch and whitefish. Fishing trips are organized by fishing guide Vesa Kaulanen from Ylläs Yöpuu. . Vesa will take you fishing to the Ylläs area and Muonio. If you are looking for an adventure, then you can rent a rubber boat (transportation is provided) from Vesa and paddle down the Äkäsjoki river while you try and catch the big one. Cabins for fishermen are provided by Ylläs Yöpuu.

The Muonio-Torniojoki river or the "Passage" also runs through the Kolari region. It is a superb area for salmon fishing. As the river is hundreds of kilometres long, there is plenty of fishing space for everyone. There are a number of accomodation services, boat rentals and fishing services by the river.
