TAMPERE REGION - LAKE FISHING
The Tampere Region (Pirkanmaa) is a region in the western part of the Finnish Lake District. Our region offers a diverse range of fishing sites to suit every taste. After all, there is plenty of water here, covering as much as 15% of the total area. There are 2,571 lakes of over one hectare in the region. Water areas are relatively deep, the average depth being 11 metres. Their most typical water quality classification is ‘good’. In addition to major water routes, many small lakes are also well-stocked and interesting fishing sites. The open-water fishing season lasts from when the ice melts in early May to the end of November. The largest lakes will not freeze over until December.
Zander and other game fish species
There are plenty of alternatives for catching different species of fish in and around the City of Tampere. There are 40 species of fish and two species of crayfish living in the waters of the region. For trolling and spinning zander, for example, all large lakes detailed in the Fishing Pass are potential sites. Lakes Pyhäjärvi, Kulovesi, Rautavesi and Kyrösjärvi are examples of the best zander waters. There are also plenty of zander in several small and medium-sized lakes. Therefore, the Tampere Region, “the Zanderland”, is part of the best zander area in Finland.

Convenient accommodation, guided fishing trips
You can find accommodation located close to the fishing grounds. There are cottages and other kinds of accommodation of different standards for you to use as a base for your fishing trip and to meet your particular needs. The accommodation sites offer boats and fishing tackle, while some of them also sell fishing licences and, if necessary, they can organize a fishing guide for you. There are also opportunities for catching crayfish. At your lodgings, you can relax and forget the worries of everyday life, sinking into a deep sleep after a successful day’s fishing. In the morning, you can start a new day listening to the birds singing. The spring and autumn in particular are good seasons for fishing and cottages also have their best availability at those times. Anglers’ basic game species, pike and perch, are fish that you can go after in all waters. Lakes Keurusselkä, Ruovesi, Kyrösjärvi and Längelmävesi, for example, are lakes for pike where you cannot fail. You can rest assured that there is a constant threat of big pike in open lake areas. In addition to the major water routes, many small lakes are ideal for ice-fishing, where, in between perch nibs, you may also entice a whitefish to bite in late winter.

In addition to zander, brown trout and landlocked salmon are among the most sought-after species for anglers. These red-fleshed predatory fish are eager to snatch your lure on Lakes Näsijärvi and Tarjannevesi and on many other large lakes. The same goes for asp, cyprinids that grow to be large and whizz the lines of anglers especially on Lakes Kulovesi and Rautavesi as well as on the Kuokkalankoski Rapids in Lempäälä.

The most popular forms of fishing on lakes are spinning and trolling as well as angling and jigging. When lake fishing for salmonoids, the main method is trolling. When trolling, plugs (wobblers) are the most popular lures for zander, pike and salmonoids. People also use spoons for brown trout and landlocked salmon, in particular when fishing in deep waters in summer, as well as for pike. Spoons are the best lures for casting for pike. In early summer, zander are pursued by casting a jig. Perch strike jigs and spinners voraciously in shallow spots, as do pike that thrive in bay waters.

If you are looking for guided services, the fishing guides in the Tampere Region are at your disposal. You can find their contacts on the page listing programme services. A fishing guide takes you to hot spots and reveals the secrets of fish and fishing – or at least a few of them.
