TAMPERE REGION - RIVER FISHING
The rapid-flowing water sites in the Tampere Region vary from the narrow and small-scale rapids of the headwaters, with an average flow rate of just a few cubic metres, to the foaming white waters of the narrower stretches of major water routes, such as the Tammerkoski Rapids and the Kuokkalankoski and Herralankoski Rapids, with flow rates of dozens of cubic metres of water.
Good Catches of Brown Trout The most common trophy fish in the Pirkanmaa province rapids is brown trout. Trout fishing is good, for example, in the Kotala Rapids, Vilppula Rapid, Herraskoski Rapid at Virrat, and also in the Pääskylänjoki River at Längelmäki. Trout size here averages 1-2 kilograms. Because these rapids are part of or connected with a larger watercourse, there are always factual possibilities for hooking the really big ones, which migrate up from the lakes. Brown trout over 10 kg have been caught in the Siuronkoski (2001) and Tammerkoski rapids (1998). Record fish of this size, of course, are rarities. But especially in early spring and in autumn in many rapids trout of several kilograms are no wonder. You just have to be in the right place at the right time!

Rainbow trout also is a very common catch in many of our rapids. If you are after rainbow trout, head to the Tammerkoski Rapids in the heart of Tampere City, or to Putajankoski of the Kiikoisjoki River in Suodenniemi region, or to Poltinkoski at the lower part of the Aurejoki River. You can fish for rainbows also at the fishing parks of Pappilanjoki and Sikkilänjoki.

Grayling appears, for example, in the Kotala Rapids, Tammerkoski, Vilppulankoski and the Viinikanjoki River. Size averaging usually from 0.3 to 0.6 kg.

Asp Attacks Lures at Kuokkalankoski Asp, which is the symbol of this province, prefers our numerous lakes, rapids and streams. Be prepared to asp attacks especially in the Siuronkoski Rapid, Herralankoski at Lempäälä, and Kuokkalankoski. Also the Haihunkoski at Viiala and, in the near future, also the Vilppulankoski Rapid are potential objectives for asp fishers. Trophy asp size is usually some 1.5 to 2 kilograms, but each year significantly larger ones are caught. Record asp caught with a rod is the 6.02 kg giant, who was calmed down in 1998 in the Siuronkoski Rapid. Asp attacks crankbaits of bleak color, but also flies and leeches.

For brook trout, head to the Kuru region, to the Karjulankoski Rapid, Sikkilänjoki River or Riuttasoja Brook. At the Tammerkoski edge a lucky fisherman may hook also lake salmon, which are coming down from the upper Näsijärvi Lake. In late autumn Tammerkoski and especially its lower parts are dream spots for whitefish fly fishing without compare.

The rapids fishing places offer also pikeperch (or zander), which will snatch jigs in early summer e.g. downstream the Vilppula Rapid. Pikeperch may surprise you in the rapids of Kuokkalankoski, Herralankoski, Haihunkoski and the Pappilanjoki River. Also several other natural species find their habitat in the Pirkanmaa province rapids and rivers, such as pike, perch and roach. Don't be surprised if, lets say, at Vilppulankoski or Kotala Rapids an angry 2-kilogran ide attacks your hook and makes you believe for a while that you caught a salmon.
